Gonzaga offers athletic opportunities on many levels: intramural, club and NCAA Division I. More than 60 percent of the GU student body participates in some form of intramural activity, while our student-athletes compete as part of the West Coast Conference in volleyball, soccer, cross-country, basketball, baseball, rowing, tennis, golf and track. At the local McCarthey Center you can catch Division I basketball at its finest. Both the Men and Woman’s team have proven tough competitors finding their way deep into the playoffs over the last 10 years.

Multiple time Northwest League Champions, the Spokane Indians are one of the Northwest’s premier Minor League teams who have produced many Major league players to various teams including the Padres, Royals and the Rangers. Indians play home in Avista Stadium seating 7,202 fans ready to route on their team. Come see the amazing atmosphere, meet their mascot Otto, and feed the family with the ever popular $1 hot dog night!

The Spokane Chiefs are a major junior ice hockey team that plays in the Western Hockey League based out of Spokane, Washington. The team plays its home games at the Spokane Arena. Spokane consistently ranks in the top 10 in the Canadian Hockey League in attendance. They are the current Memorial Cup champions, and first team ever to win the renamed President’s Trophy, Ed Chynoweth Cup.

Washington State University is a member of the Pac-10 athletic conference. The school’s mascot is “Butch T. Cougar” and the school’s colors are crimson and gray. Varsity athletics include men’s baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, and track and field, as well as women’s basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, swimming, softball, volleyball, tennis, and track and field. In the past WSU had varsity programs of boxing, wrestling, and gymnastics. In 1937, Roy Petragallo and Ed McKinnon won the NCAA boxing championship, WSU’s first national championship.


Football
Over the past five years, the Cougar football teams have been distinguished by three ten win seasons, three top ten poll rankings, and bowl game appearances. The Cougars shared the Pac-10 title in 2002.


Men’s Basketball
In 1917, the Cougars won their only basketball National Championship. In the late-1970s when George Raveling was head coach, the Cougars were among the Pac-10 conference’s top teams. Before becoming coach in 2005, Tony Bennett spent three seasons as an assistant to his father, the last two as associate head coach.
